Generali Millennium

They say that bricks and mortar are the best investment. This would certainly be the view of the six workers, 3 men and 3 women, from the village of Kuppayanallu who, in the last few days, have begun work in the brick factory set up in the parish of Ongur, in Tamilnadu, in India.

From a business plan drawn up on paper in March 2010 by Father Dominic Jayakumar, student of the ALTIS MBA, the company was finally registered on December 8th last year, with the opening ceremony taking place with the participation of the governing body of Loyola Educational Institutions, which has followed and promoted the project.

Of particular importance in this initiative is the employment of the so-called Dalit, or individuals coming from the caste of the untouchables.

Although in theory the caste system in India has been abolished by law, in reality there is still strong resistance and, to all effects, the Dalit remain at the margins of society.

The Dalit, states Dominic in his Master's Dissertation, make up a fifth of the Indian population - around 200 million people. In the region of Tamilnadu alone, where the brick factory has been set up, they represent 19.17% of the 80 million population.

Six people, of course, are not very many, but this is a first step and others will soon join the project: in fact, it is estimated that 50 workers will soon be employed. These workers will earn a decent wage, be involved in the management of the company, and, above all, regain a degree of dignity which society has thus far denied them.
