For several years, the primary social innovation that has preoccupied the attention of many stakeholders in the field of social entrepreneurship has been microfinance.
Looking ahead, an emerging model termed micro-consignment offers encouraging prospects as a social innovation that may someday rival the scale and scope of microfinance while also addressing some of its shortcomings.
The micro-consignment model (MCM) is a sustainable, replicable means of delivering health-related and economically beneficial goods and services to remote villages in developing countries. Rather than focusing on a specific product or service, micro-consignment is an innovation method of organizing which, like a business model, identifies how all of the elements of a system fit into a working whole.
Compared to microfinance and micro-franchise, the MCM offers important benefits by lowering the barriers to micro-entrepreneurs and by reducing potential negative outcomes of micro-entrepreneurs.
While some challenges exist, the MCM offers the potential for scaling of social impact through additional products, services and organizations.
